December 7, 2020 By Nancy Bailey 4 Comments

Mental illness in children existed before Covid-19. How many students are struggling with it during the pandemic? How did school privatization contribute to this phenomenon? Before Covid-19 A 2018 survey conducted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals noted that their top concern is the rising numbers of students with emotional problems and mental health […]

Addressing Mental Illness in Children During Trying Times

August 14, 2017 By Nancy Bailey 7 Comments

As schools open their doors for the 2017-2018 school year, it is a good time to discuss students, schools, and mental health. Recently, we learned that suicides have spiked in middle school. Young people are still bullied, often online. Sadly, national and world events can be far more alarming to children than adults might realize. […]

Patty Duke, Helen Keller and Similarities of Greatness

March 31, 2016 By Nancy Bailey 6 Comments

As a young girl glued to the TV, like many, the movie The Miracle Worker had a profound effect on me. I wanted nothing more afterwards than to be a teacher just like Anne Sullivan. I lived in Michigan, and the Michigan School for the Blind, which closed in 1995, was where I wanted to […]

Robin Williams and Lessons to Be Learned About Kids with Mental Illness in Public Schools

August 12, 2014 By Nancy Bailey 8 Comments

I have been reminded that Robin Williams died of a particularly severe neurological disease called Lewy Body Dementia. This is not a psychiatric disorder, so it is incorrect to associate Williams to mental illness. Unfortunately, this is an older post and the title is stuck. Still, the information about schools and mental illness I hope […]

@MOREcaucusUFT @rweingarten @UFT @NYCSchools @CTULocal1 Schools are “so safe” my son’s school is closed for a third consecutive day... now the 6th closure since returning after Holiday break... the NYC percentage of teachers/staff/students sick with COVID has drastically increased. Why is this allowed?! What about this is safe?

Has anyone told the @CDCgov about the old and ineffective HVAC systems in our nation’s schools? https://twitter.com/cdcgov/status/1354128880119017473

A new @CDCMMWR finds that K-12 schools can limit the spread of #COVID19 through masks & other preventive measures, even with high rates of COVID-19 in the community. More: http://bit.ly/MMWR12621.

@lauranbowman @CDCgov It would be nice to see some of the @CDCgov actually make some school visits and talk to teachers. This is no different from what they said before is it?

The School Equity and Staffing Act (HB1929) would fully fund the #VBOE’s prescribed changes for #Virginia schools to meet the needs of students. This imp legislation is up in @VaHouse Approps. @DelegateTorian @MarkSicklesVA we ask that you vote to #FundOurSchools.
