Reading Aloud to Help Children Read Well Their Whole Lives!

August 17, 2022 By Nancy Bailey 12 Comments

Every new parent should get a copy of Jim Trelease’s The Read-Aloud Handbook. Teachers should have a copy too. In honor of the late Trelease, parent and award-winning artist, writer, and author, it’s important to point out that his well-documented research lives on encouraging reading aloud to children, even babies, to foster a lifelong love […]

Lead Poisoning: A Known Learning Loss Threat

May 10, 2022 By Nancy Bailey 8 Comments

Many parents are concerned about their child’s learning loss due to the pandemic. If children are behind, they can catch up. But there’s another culprit that could cause serious difficulties. Lead poisoning poses a threat to children through the water they drink from lead solder/pipes, dust exposure involving old paint in homes, and living near […]

“The Truth About Reading” Is Missing Truths and Backstory

October 14, 2021 By Nancy Bailey 97 Comments

Americans are getting primed with a trailer for a new documentary called The Truth About Reading. It’s said there needs to be a grassroots movement of parents and educators who are angry and say enough is enough. Wouldn’t it be better if teachers and parents met and shared their concerns about reading at their schools? Schools […]

Helping Students, Including Those with Learning Disabilities, With Self-Expression

August 13, 2019 By Nancy Bailey 4 Comments

The most important words a student can hear from their teacher or parent are, “I want to hear how you think and feel about this.” Helping students express themselves through writing is critical in every class at every grade level. Self-expression is so important today that I felt compelled to write about one of my […]

The Learning Disability Teaching Credentials that Time Forgot

June 4, 2019 By Nancy Bailey 25 Comments

Whether it’s dyslexia (a specific learning disability) or writing, attention, organization, or other learning and behavioral difficulties, children who struggle in school need teachers who can help them learn. Sometimes that help can occur in a general class setting. Other times a child might benefit from small group or individualized assistance. That’s what special education […]

School Choice Deception: Florida’s Plan and Students Who Don’t Measure Up

December 16, 2018 By Nancy Bailey 7 Comments

Florida is a bellwether state. What happens to schools there will move to other states in one form or another. I would like to share a personal story of how I met school choice as a teacher in Florida and how it helped cement in me the desire to advocate for a public school system […]

The Dangers of SEL Assessment Data to Students with LD Social Disabilities and Autism

October 27, 2018 By Nancy Bailey Leave a Comment

Today, I would like to bring attention to the dangers of social-emotional learning assessment to a segment of our student population. The focus on behavior is becoming the new purpose of school, and that alone should raise questions. School boards, PTA’s, and school organizations should be discussing how these curriculum changes impact what and how […]

Despite F Ratings, Dyslexia Charter School Has Gotten Repeated State Approval

September 17, 2018 By Nancy Bailey Leave a Comment

Interest in charter schools for students with disabilities is on the rise. Will such schools destroy the Individuals with Disabilities Act’s (IDEA) rights of children? IDEA is the reauthorization of the 1975 Public Law 94-142. While parents might be dissatisfied with dyslexia programming in public schools, how can they be assured charter schools will provide […]

Response to Intervention’s Role in the Texas Special Education Scandal: What are Other States Doing?

August 24, 2018 By Nancy Bailey 7 Comments

Whenever we read or hear about special education in public schools, it is important to remember, that since the beginning of Public Law 94-142 (IDEA) in 1975, many policymakers have resisted funding services for students who learn differently. The bill was so unpopular that President Gerald Ford refused to have a Rose Garden signing. Since that […]

Betsy DeVos Goes Trick or Treating for Dyslexia

October 31, 2017 By Nancy Bailey 9 Comments

US Senator Bill Cassidy MD (R-LA) and his wife Dr. Laura Cassidy recently met with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and dyslexia and learning disability organizations to discuss serving children with dyslexia. It’s important to remember five things. Public schools used to do more for students with learning disabilities. Resource classes, general education support, and certified […]

@SecCardona @usedgov Wondering if every public school in the U.S. now offers quality art and music classes, & students have access to a rich arts program? Are the arts returning under the Biden administration? They've been missing in poor schools for awhile, since NCLB.

@KJWinEducation Also, consider this well-researched piece indicating that the views of the extreme phonics folks don't square the views of Jean Chall, the researcher who championed the use of phonics during the last reading wars. https://nancyebailey.com/2023/03/26/the-science-of-reading-and-the-rejection-of-picture-books/?fbclid=IwAR3K0fz-cWKbAh-mitL347hMrWGEjC0Gtd_PIxegTc0RiuzPoXxXSdoW7Cg

Remember the days when Arne Duncan insisted that having different ‘goal posts’ in every state was preventing us from improving public schools in America? Good times.

I wish I could say we’ve evolved since 2015, when Duncan stepped down. https://teacherinastrangeland.blog/2023/03/25/the-absolute-folly-of-standardization/
