August 14, 2021 By Nancy Bailey 3 Comments

Last year, when Covid-19 drove teachers to switch to remote learning, the antennae of those following corporate school reforms over the years shot up. High School College: High School Hell!

Freshmen are told on one hand not to worry about college, then given an early version of a college entrance exam three weeks into their first year of high school. ~Chicago Tribune Nov.13, 2017 Like kindergartners pushed to be first graders, high school is the new college. Teens are more anxious than ever. Depression and […]

TeachingWorks (or Doesn’t) at the University of Michigan: The Corporatization of Teacher Education

December 8, 2015 By Nancy Bailey 11 Comments

It is with concern that I write about the Gates influence on the University of Michigan’s College of Education and the new program called TeachingWorks. The Gates Foundation is giving $6.8 million to the U of M to influence how they will transform teacher preparation. The Helmsley Charitable Trust Grant also provided $1.1 million. This […]

Honoring identity, ditching logs, levels as *teacher* tools, independent reading, student CHOICE, and honoring multimodal texts… Yes to all! ⁦@KQED⁩ https://www.kqed.org/mindshift/61287/beyond-reading-logs-and-lexile-levels-supporting-students-multifaceted-reading-lives

Science of Reading camp never discusses the importance of picture books. How much time do children get to explore them? How often are they read to for enjoyment? This is worrisome. https://nancyebailey.com/2023/03/26/the-science-of-reading-and-the-rejection-of-picture-books/

@SecCardona @usedgov Wondering if every public school in the U.S. now offers quality art and music classes, & students have access to a rich arts program? Are the arts returning under the Biden administration? They've been missing in poor schools for awhile, since NCLB.

@KJWinEducation Also, consider this well-researched piece indicating that the views of the extreme phonics folks don't square the views of Jean Chall, the researcher who championed the use of phonics during the last reading wars. https://nancyebailey.com/2023/03/26/the-science-of-reading-and-the-rejection-of-picture-books/?fbclid=IwAR3K0fz-cWKbAh-mitL347hMrWGEjC0Gtd_PIxegTc0RiuzPoXxXSdoW7Cg
