14 Scary Monsters Children Face On Halloween and Beyond, Affecting Their Schooling

October 31, 2021 By Nancy Bailey Leave a Comment

Teachers and public schools might be blamed when children have trouble learning. But many variables affect how children do in school, and most are out of a teacher’s control. 10 Serious Issues Facing Public School Students: Where’s Betsy?

May 27, 2017 By Nancy Bailey 7 Comments

Betsy DeVos wastes precious time on her choice initiative, ignoring the most serious problems facing our young people in public schools. At a hearing the other day, she pushed many of these problems onto the states. But I would argue that these difficulties still require thoughtful attention and research from an education secretary who should […]

By Laurie Taylor-Mitchell The annual costs for new computers and technology (STAT*) is now $57 million, and over $250 million overall is expected to be spent by 2018. Administrative salaries and costs are also increasing within the school system: the salary budget for the Chief Academic Officer and two other positions is nearly $500,000. In […]

I’m Thankful for Real Public Schools!

November 24, 2016 By Nancy Bailey Leave a Comment

With the DeVos selection, I thought I’d tweak and rerun an old Thanksgiving post. Here are a few of the things we should focus on instead of breaking up public schools. Have a beautiful Thanksgiving! Enjoy your kids. ____________________ Thanksgiving can be a lonely time. It can be a time where problems appear worse, when […]

Do Americans Love Their Children?—Yes! Many of them DO!

February 14, 2014 By Nancy Bailey 2 Comments

“Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (New International Version) A while back I was talking with a friend about school problems, and she surprised me by saying “America doesn’t love its children!” I was taken aback. I’d never […]

Could Common Core, along with NCLB be driving the Science of Reading? Do SoR supporters ever critique these programs fairly?

Paul Thomas @plthomasEdD

If you buy the SOR movement, and think criticism of it is off-base, PLEASE review the Common Core movement:

Uncritically embraced, implemented and drove HUGE ***edu-market rebranding***, teacher retraining, and curriculum changes ... before imploding and ...

If you are making claims about education/reading and insist on using NRP as proof while also misrepresenting NRP findings, your entire argument has lost its footing. NRP = limited, 20+ yrs old, did *not* prove all Ss need systematic phonics
