Will Online Instruction Replace Brick-and-Mortar Schools After the Covid-19 Crisis?

March 31, 2020 By Nancy Bailey 22 Comments

While parents shelter-in-place maintaining a sense of normalcy for their children, those critical of public education won’t stop criticizing public schools. They believe that technology should replace teachers and brick-and-mortar schools. They imply that after this difficult period ends, we will move from brick-and-mortar schools to online instruction. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos In her recent […]

March 8, 2018 By Nancy Bailey 6 Comments

Reading is essential for learning, yet students across the U.S. are completing elementary school with inadequate reading abilities. So begins the announcement in The Harvard Gazette telling us about the new $30 million grant Chan/Zuckerberg will hand over to Harvard’s School of Education and MIT’s Integrative Learning Initiative (MITili). Learning to read, all of us […]

6 Concerns: Are “Community Schools” Paving the Way for School Choice and Digital Instruction?

February 22, 2018 By Nancy Bailey 4 Comments

Here is how the Coalition of Community Schools defines their concept of community schools. A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger […]

IEPs for All—Or Something Else?

September 9, 2015 By Nancy Bailey 3 Comments

Some of us imagined a public school system that would drop special education labels and look at all children individually and collectively for their strengths and what they need to learn. We thought of it as Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for everyone. You will likely hear about “IEPs for All” in the future, if you […]

We "get to know where the money is being spent"? Great! So every private school receiving tax dollars will have to open their books and be subject to the same standards of financial transparency as public schools, right? Right?

I’ve known @Brandon4Chicago for a long time.

On a CTU trip to Springfield I got to witness firsthand the respect that electeds have for his integrity and ability to work in the political arena.

People’s faces light up when they see him. His is that dynamic.

Always comical for @BetsyDeVos trolls whining that teachers contribute to us.

Aren’t privatizer billions enough for them?

We will block vouchers again with the powerful teacher/preacher dynamic duo!

Thank you @TexasAFT @OfficialATPE @UEATexas @txstateteachers @texascta! #txed

As MN seems about to adopt a drill and kill phonics fundamentalist literacy curriculum it's worth examining that now “There’s a whole generation of kids who associate reading with assessment" and have come to hate it https://www.theatlantic.com/books/archive/2023/03/children-reading-books-english-middle-grade/673457/

The privatize-schools crowd talks about #parents rights while pushing 3rd grade retention laws taking that decision away from parents and #teachers.

Don’t ever mistake attacks on #publiceducation for #parents rights.

I’m glad our #migov #mileg know the difference. https://twitter.com/senpolehanki/status/1639328314966802447

Senator Dayna Polehanki @SenPolehanki

“I want to thank Gov. Whitmer for signing this important legislation. Parents and schools should be trusted to make decisions about grade retention—the state shouldn’t mass-flunk 3rd graders without parent input based on one test,” said State Senator Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia).”
